Description

This is a powerful 2 piece flange Pre War TB4 conversion Banjo. The fact this has the original raised head no hole tone ring is very significant and gives this banjo a power that few banjos truly possess. If someone wanted the Ralph Stanley sound this banjo would be the way to get it with this tone ring and these were only made for less then 1 year. This banjo produces a very hard driving sound and these raised head no hole pre war rings have gotten very popular.

The 2 piece flange TB4 banjos were mahogany so this has a mahogany resonator. The shell is the original pre war shell. This has a new mahogany neck made by Steve Huber with a rosewood fretboard that has a Hearts and Flowers inlay pattern. There is w/b/w binding on each side of the neck and resonator as well.

Most of the metal on this is Huber hardware which is made by Prucha. We believe the tube for the flange is original but the plate for the flange we are not sure of. The rest of the metal we know is new. The only exception is the raised head ring which we know is original. This definitely is a very special banjo that is very hard to find and this has the original resonator, rim and tone ring for sure. This includes a worn modern Gibson Case.

Condition

This has some wear but so much of it is new that the banjo overall is in fantastic shape. The back of the resonator has a lot of button and buckle scratching. There also is a spot on the bottom of the resonator where the binding cracked. That is pictured. The hardware looks fantastic but again that is new metal (at least almost all of it is new). The neck is a $1400 new Huber neck and is also in fantastic shape. There are spikes in frets 7 and 9. The banjo definitely shows wear but is overall really clean. The case is worn but it is sturdy and functional. The handle leather is ripping a bit but the handle itself is strong and secure.

Set Up

This has been set up at the Banjo Warehouse. This has a Huber frosted head which is set to 90. The bridge intonation is set. The strings are new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings and the banjo is set up really well. This is a phenomenal player that is bursting with tone and volume.
