1976/1977 Music Man Stingray Bass Sunburst 9 LBS 9 OZ

This is a Pre Ernie Ball Stingray that was made between the end of 1976 and the beginning of 1977. This has been inspected and set up by the Stingray Man at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta Georgia.

Description

This is an early 1977 with a 1976 body that is all original. This has all of the parts which would be on a 1976 and are the most important. This has Long Pole Pickups, a Thunder Pocket, epoxy 1977 preamp, string through body and is light weight as well and clean. This is the design that not only is what all the most serious collectors want this is also the most difficult to find.

This has a sunburst finish with a one piece maple neck. The pickguard is black and this has all chrome hardware. The bridge is string through body and still has the original mutes. I did a close up of these mutes because these are vintage mutes, not just a set of Ernie Ball Mutes. All of the finish is original and this also has the TM logo on the headstock which was changed to R in the middle of 1977.

The electronics are all original and including a John Holmes Long Pole Pickup. The pickup cavity has factory routing with channels that I call the Thunder Pocket. These long poles extend into this pocket and produce some serious tone. The electronics are all original including a 1977 epoxy preamp. The body is dated December 1976 and the neck is May 1977. This weighs 9 pounds 9 ounces and also includes an original case.

Condition

This bass is remarkably clean. There are a couple of nicks in the finish but just a couple and overall this finish is exceptional. The finish really shines. All of the hardware has been cleaned by the Stingray Man to a shine as well. This bass glows. The frets and the fretboard are in extraordinary condition as well. This is clean up and down.

I want to mention some kind of paint or sealer was used to paint inside the pickup and electronics cavity. This can happen because these old Stingrays did have some ground and electronic feedback issues which this paint seems to help often. That is not original but is inside the cavities where it isn’t visible. The original case is definitely clean with new latches. This bass is extraordinary in every respect and has new strings and set up with great string height.
