Description

This is a vintage Gibson RB800 5 string flathead banjo from 1979. These were on the high end of the Gibson catalog and include gold plated and engraved hardware. This banjo is all original except it has an upgraded truss rod nut and it once had a 5th string capo. That left two pin size holes on the side of the neck which are so small I didn’t see at first. This banjo is also Blonde which for the RB800 is the more rare color, I believe. This is absolutely gorgeous and functionally is perfect with a clean original case.

This has a very thick maple shell to accomodate the 2 piece flange. The neck and resonator are both maple with RB800 style purfling and white binding on each side. The fretboard is ebony with RB800 inlay. This also includes an original and period correct Gibson Hardshell Case.

Condition

Overall the banjo is in fantastic shape and has been professionally cleaned at our shop. There is a bit of wear in the gold but not much. The gold looks really good. The finish is in great shape and has been waxed for some more shine. There is a scratch on the back of the neck which is pictured in closeup. The frets and fretboard are also in great shape with spikes at frets 7 and 9. There is 2 pin size holes from a 5th string capo and also a new and upgraded truss rod nut as well. The banjo isn’t perfect but it’s still in great shape. The case is clean inside and out.

Set Up

This has a new Huber frosted head which is set to 90. The bridge is a Snuffy Smith and this has new Huber Strings. This is a classic Gibson design and this is set up and ready to go.
