This is a 1980 Deering Deluxe 5 string banjo.  This has been fully inspected and set up here at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta Georgia.

Description

Deering Banjos started in the mid 1970’s and at the time this was a very high end Deering.  I believe the resonator is mahogany but it could be walnut.  The grain is somewhat difficult for me to identify.  I also am not certain about the neck but I believe that is also mahogany but that could be maple.  The hardware is nickel and this has a 3 piece flange.  The plate part of the flange is 2 pieces plus the tube.  This has all original hardware with an original armrest and tailpiece.  The only part on this that is not original is one of the tuning keys is not original but it has the original button.  Most people would never know that tuner had been changed because it is nearly identical.

The fretboard is ebony with snowflakes.  The headstock features an Eagle along with Deering Banjo Company.  There is black binding on each side of the neck and white binding on the front and back of the resonator.  This could be comparable to a Deering Banjo that would cost $3000 new and it’s nice that it is now a vintage piece.  This also includes the original hardshell case.

Condition

This banjo is definitely in great shape.  There are some light finish checks on the back of the resonator and that is about all that is worn.  The finish otherwise is gorgeous and this really looks great.  The hardware is also clean with a nice shine.  The neck and fretboard are in great shape.  The first few frets do show a hint of wear but not much at all.  This has no buzz and that light fretwear is truly minimal.  The original case is also clean.

Set Up

This has a new Huber frosted head which is set to 90 on a drum dial.  This has correct intonation.  The action is set well and is adjustable.  This feels great to play with enough string height to pull a lot of tone out of this banjo.  This has a Grover bridge with an ebony cap.  This has new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings.  This is set up to play and also sounds incredible.
