Description

This is a 1970’s Gibson RB250 5 string Banjo that is all original except for the rim and resonator binding and a couple of hooks. This was restored at one point with the new shell and binding by Robin Smith. He also cut the neck so it sat correctly against the pot. As far as function is concerned this is probably a better banjo then a 1970’s RB250 with an original shell. This is an absolute monster that screams, bangs and pops hard.

This has a Heartland Raw 3 ply Maple shell. The neck and resonator are original Mahogany Gibson RB250 parts from the 1970’s. The fretboard is ebony with a leaves and bows inlay pattern. The hardware is all original Gibson as well which is nickel. This includes a tube and plate flange and the original Gibson tone ring. Robin Smith machined the rim to fit these parts. The tuners, armrest and tailpiece are also all original.

Robin also replaced the resonator binding and aged it yellow. The finish on the neck and resonator are original and the binding on the neck is also original. The case is the original Gibson Case but it does have sort of a musty smell. This is not uncommon for older Gibson cases or older cases generally.

I want to mention the frets are a bit too low for spikes so we had the spikes removed and the holes filled in. This can have a 5th string capo so it is possible to capo it but apparently spikes won’t work with the fret height.

Condition

This banjo is in really good shape for sure. There is a little bit of scratching on the back of the neck around frets 3-5 probably from a capo. The back of the resonator has light checking. The finish is definitely in overall great shape.

The frets and fretboard are also clean. The hardware is in fantastic shape with the only wear showing on the armrest. This banjo is definitely in great shape.

The case has some wear on the outside and I mentioned it also has a mild musty smell. The case is sturdy and will have no issue for storing and transporting the banjo.

Set Up

This has a new Remo frosted head which is set to 90. The bridge is a Timeless bridge and this has new Huber strings. I am dead serious when I say this banjo is a cannon and it is also set up to maximize performance.
