This is the 17th Granada that was made during the Rich era. Super Cool piece of history. The banjo has been fully inspected and set up here at the Banjo Warehouse.

Description

This is the 17th Granada that was made during the Greg Rich era and is all original with an original case. The banjo is curly maple with gold hardware. The neck is also curly maple with a rosewood fretboard. The fretboard has a Flying Eagle inlay pattern. There is white binding on each side of the neck and resonator. The gold hardware is engraved. The tension hoop and armrest both have Granada engraving and the tailpiece has the word Granada engraved. The armrest has been replated but everything else is totally original and the armrest itself is the original armrest. There are spikes at the 7th-9th frets.

The tone ring has a different texture for the gold plating than the ones that came later. The gold became smooth as time went on. In addition the finish has a little more orange than the later Granadas. Both of these details were only found on the earliest Rich era Gibson Banjos.

The flange and tone ring both have the number 17 stamped on them. The flange has the stamp under the neck heel and the tone ring is on the bottom of the ring. I forgot to take pictures when it was taken apart but I am gong to do that. If I have to get the pics to make a sale I will do that upon request. The significance is this banjo was the 17th granada made during the Rich era and these stamps support this. There is also chalk writing the serial number on the inside of the resonator. I don’t know if that is original or not but it is there. Greg Rich era Granadas are becoming very hard to find and bringing a lot of money and this is such a cool example of one.

Condition

The banjo is definitely in good shape overall. The finish looks great. It isn’t mint and there is some light wear on the back of the neck. The back of the resonator has a couple of light button scratches. Outside of these points the finish looks incredible. The flange has some gold that is worn off on the right side of the neck. Other than that spot all the gold looks great!!! The armrest has been replated because of that being a more heavily used piece. The fretboard is clean and the frets are also clean. They aren’t mint, but clean. The original case is in good shape with very light wear on the outside.

Set Up

This has been set up here at the shop. The action is comfortable and produces some great tone and volume. The banjo has proper intonation. The head is set to 90 on a drum dial all the way around the head. The head is a new Huber frosted head and this also has a Huber bridge with a rosewood cap. This is strung with Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings.
