1988 Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard 5 string Banjo

This is an all original 1988 Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard that is from the beginning of the Greg Rich era. This has been inspected and set up at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta Georgia.

Description

The Earl Scruggs Standard is a copy of the banjo that was played by Earl Scruggs for many years. This is an early example of one from the Greg Rich era that is basically the perfect Scruggs Standard. This is all original and also includes the original hardshell case.

This has a 3 ply hard rock maple shell. The neck and resonator are both curly maple. This has nickel hardware. The fretboard is ebony and has a Hearts and Flowers inlay pattern. There is w/b/w binding on each side of the neck and resonator. The hardware is all original including a one piece armrest, Presto tailpiece, Gibson USA flange and a Kulesh tone ring. This also has original Gibson Keith D tuners with Gibson stamped on the tuner and the button. Plus in the early Rich era the finish would have more red or orange in the color and this has that finish. This is unique, early, special, all original and clean and this is not your ordinary Scruggs Standard. Plus this has an original Gibson USA case.

On top of all of this the label on the inside of the rim was hand signed by Earl Scruggs. The most serious collectors value the light blue signature more than the black and this is light blue. This is a very nice touch.

This banjo sounds incredible, it has a sweet tone with a lot of volume and this really turns head. No banjo captures the essence of Earl Scruggs sound like the Scruggs Standard and this is an extraordinary example of one.

Condition

This has been professionally cleaned at the Banjo Warehouse. The metal has been disassembled and buffed to give it a very nice shine. The wood has been cleaned and waxed and also shines. In fact this glows. The resonator seems to be free of the normal button scratching that is found on these old banjos, it really is clean. The neck and fretboard are in good shape. The fretboard does show some tarnish but it is very light and can only be seen up close and in bright light. The first few frets do have some wear but this is only the first few frets. There is no functional issue caused by this, no buzzing at all. This is absolutely a clean banjo with normal wear that has been professionally cleaned to look new. The case is also in great shape.

Set Up

This has also been professionally set up at the Banjo Warehouse. This has a new Huber frosted head by Remo which is set to 90 on a drum dial. This has a Snuffy Smith Bridge which is intonated correctly. The strings are new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings. The action is set nicely and this is fully adjustable. This is a gorgeous, rare, special banjo that has been professionally cleaned and set up to look and sound incredible.
