This is a very rare and all original 1988 Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard with the original case. This has been fully inspected and set up here at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta.

Description

This was one of the early Scruggs Standard Banjos that was made when the Rich era was at it’s top level of performance. This is a very special Earl Scruggs Standard that is a better banjo than most Scruggs Banjos available.

This is a copy of the banjo that was played by Earl Scruggs for a long time. The banjo itself was a Granada that had nickel instead of gold and ebony as opposed to rosewood. This is the most popular model of Gibson Banjo and this is one of the finest examples of that model.

The rim is a 3 ply hard rock maple shell. The resonator is a highly figured flame maple as is the neck. This has nickel hardware and is all original. The fretboard is ebony with a Hearts and Flowers inlay pattern. There is w/b/w binding on each side of the neck and resonator. This has a one piece armrest and a very early Presto Tailpiece. The tone ring is a very early Kulesh Tone ring which is a phenomenal ring. This is stamped AFP instead of RKW which is significant and the fact the serial number is 3 digits also makes this a very early Kulesh Ring. On top of this the banjo has original Gibson Keith D tuners with Gibson stamped in the tuner and button. These tuners are exceptionally rare and collectors will pay $300 or more for a set of those. Finally this has a very early and also very rare Gibson Hardshell Case. Everything about this banjo is special and again it is all original.

The finish has an orange hue which serious collectors know is a very good sign. All of the absolute best Rich Era banjos came out of the late 1980’s and 1990 and the best almost always had this finish. This is a very nice touch that serious collectors also know is special.

This is a great find and it is rare for any Rich era banjo from 1988 to come here at all but a Scruggs Standard is golden.

Condition

The condition actually makes this banjo even more desirable. This is super clean.

The finish looks incredible. Usually there is checking on the resonator from this era and this has no checking. That is definitely a big deal. The finish glows as does the hardware. There is some major light button scratching that can only be seen when the banjo hits the right angle of light. That could be buffed out. The metal basically looks new. The neck and fretboard are beautiful with a straight neck and frets that look almost untouched. There are no spikes but there was a 5th string capo which has been removed. This left two pin sized holes in the side of the neck that a lot of people would never notice. This banjo is absolutely beautiful and was clearly well taken care of. The original case is also super clean with no issues.

Set Up

This has been professionally set up at the Banjo Warehouse. This has a new Huber frosted head by Remo which is set to 90 on a drum dial. The bridge is a no name bridge that has correct intonation. The strings are new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings and the action feels great. This plays like butter and sounds like a cannon. This is a very special banjo that is all original, clean and has been set up to satisfy even the most serious player.
