This is a beautiful 1989 Gibson RB3 that was made in the sweet spot of the Rich era.  This has been fully inspected and set up at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta Georgia.

Description

Greg Rich is regarded as one of the finest banjo builders of today if not ever.  He once managed the Gibson Custom Shop and was responsible for the banjo design when Gibson reissued the Pre War Banjo models during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.  This was made during the Greg Rich era and this is a stunning example of a Rich era Gibson RB3.

This has a 3 ply hard rock maple shell.  The neck and resonator are mahogany with white binding on each side.  The fretboard is rosewood with a leaves and bows inlay pattern.  The hardware is nickel hardware including a Gibson USA Flange and a Gibson USA Kulesh Tone Ring.  This has a Presto style tailpiece and a Gibson one piece armrest.

I believe the neck has been refinished with new binding but it could be a replacement neck also.  The reason I believe the neck is original is I have seen a lot of Gibson Banjos and everything down to the writing on the Mastertone block reaks of Gibson.  Whatever the case may be this neck is absolutely a top quality neck and like I said I think it is original.  The tuners are original Gibson tuners with the Gibson logo engraved.  This also includes the original Gibson USA hardshell case.

This is a cannon of a banjo, super powerful with some serious Twang.  1989 was one of the best years during the Rich era and this is a great example of why.

Condition

This is in fantastic condition and has been professionally cleaned at the Banjo Warehouse.  There is some checking in the finish in the back of the resonator which is minor and also normal for Rich era finish from the 1980’s.  If anything the checking is a good thing because it proves that the finish is original.  The finish on the neck looks perfect and the fretboard and frets are also perfect.  There are spikes in frets 7,10 and 12. The hardware looks new, we took the banjo apart and buffed the metal until it glowed.  The wood has been waxed to help it shine and the fretboard has been cleaned and oiled.  This banjo is in incredible shape and the original case is in great shape as well.

Set Up

This has been professionally set up at the Banjo Warehouse.  The head is a new Huber frosted head by Remo and is set to 90 on a drum dial.  The bridge is a Grover Bridge and this is set with correct intonation.  The strings are new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings and the action is set nicely.  This also is adjustable.  This banjo really pops and if you want to turn heads and get attention this is the banjo for you.
