1990 Greg Rich Era Gibson RB4 Custom 5 string Banjo
This is one of the most rare and most beautiful Banjos from the Greg Rich era at Gibson. This is an RB4 with custom Gold Engraved Hardware. This is about as well worked as you can get. This has been inspected and set up at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta.
Description
This is a Walnut banjo with a 3 ply Hard Rock Maple shell. The neck is also walnut with a rosewood fretboard. The fretboard has a Flying Eagle inlay pattern. The tuning keys are gold with amber buttons. This has white binding with a black pin stripe on each side of the neck and resonator. This is all original and also includes a very rare original case. This has a red lining which I don’t think I have ever seen.
The gold is fully engraved. Everything. All sides of the tension hoop, the flange, the tailpiece, and the armrest, and all over each of those parts. The engraving is unreal, truly a phenomenal job that is just exquisite. The thumb screws have pearl buttons and the truss rod cover is also pearl. This banjo is one of the most incredible banjos I have ever seen. The engraving was done by Nick Kimmons.
Condition
This is basically near mint. The resonator has a couple of very shallow button scratches that can almost not be seen. Other than that this really doesn’t show any wear. The first few frets do have a touch of wear but nothing serious. That could easily be leveled with a fret dressing which is not expensive and I can have done. This is top notch work in top notch condition. The case is also nearly perfect.
Set Up
This has been set up here at the shop. The banjo has great string height and this banjo also has a lot of volume. This has proper intonation. The head is set to 90 on a drum dial all the way around the head. This has a frosted American Banjo Company head and a no name bridge. This banjo is perfect.
