1992 Gibson Rich era Scruggs Standard 5 string Banjo
This is one of the most popular banjos being made today. This was made during the Greg Rich era and is a copy of the Granada that was played by Earl Scruggs.
The banjo has a curly maple resonator with a 3 ply Hard Rock Maple Shell. The hardware is nickel. The neck is also curly maple with an ebony fretboard. The fretboard has a Hearts and Flowers inlay. There is also an extra inlay at the first fret like Earl Scruggs’ Banjo. The lugs and nuts are Huber parts which are identical. Most people would never know the difference. The tailpiece is a Presto tailpiece which is not original to the banjo. It likely is an original Gibson part. The flange, tension hoop and armrest are all original.
The finish on the pot is original but the neck has been refinished. Robin Smith did the refinish job and used the exact finish that Gibson used. Robin purchased finish from the original factory so this is truly identical. There was once a 5th string capo installed which was removed. The holes on the side of the neck have been filled. There are also spikes at the 7th and 9th frets. The banjo definitely has some changed parts but this is put together very well and does have a number of original parts. This also includes a hardshell case.
Condition
The banjo is in overall great condition. There are some points worth noting. Most notably the tone ring has had some drilling in the original holes to make them larger. This may make the banjo sound better. In addition there is a light crack in the seam on only the outer ply of the inside of the rim. That is pictured. That is really a surface crack and is not bad. And it will not effect the function. The hardware is in good shape but does show some age. The finish really looks fantastic. The fretboard is clean as are the frets. There is some very light wear on the first few frets but it is light. And only on the first few frets. The case is in great shape.
