The Earl Scruggs Standard is the best seller of Gibson Banjos and this is one of the best possible examples of a Scruggs Banjo. The Earl Scruggs Standard is a copy of the banjo that was played for years by Earl Scruggs and has a tone that only comes from a Scruggs Standard. This particular banjo is made of parts that are Greg Rich Era parts but was assembled after he left Gibson.
This has a 3 ply hard rock maple shell with a curly maple neck and resonator. The fretboard is ebony and has a Hearts and Flowers inlay. The headstock also has inlay work and includes Amber Pearl on the Gibson Logo which is gorgeous. That is a higher grade of pearl and was used for a while during the Rich era. The hardware is nickel and all original and includes a Gibson USA One Piece Flange and a Gibson USA Kulesh Tone Ring. The Banjo is all original except for the tuners but the 1st and 4th string tuners are definitely high quality and the 2nd and 3rd string has Keith D Tuners. This also includes a very clean original hardshell case which is also the type of case used during the Greg Rich era. This is a very special banjo all the way around, even for Banjo Warehouse.
This has been professionally cleaned at the Banjo Warehouse. The banjo has been disassembled and all of the hardware buffed to a very nice shine. The finish has some checking in the resonator but this is common for banjo that were built around this time at Gibson. We waxed all of the finish and it also has a really nice shine. The fretboard has been cleaned and oiled and the frets are in great shape. There was once a 5th string capo but the holes were plugged and I didn’t notice them at first because it was a good job on the hole plugging. There are no spikes. This banjo is very clean and I want to mention again that this original case is super clean as well.
This has been set up at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta. The head is a new American Banjo Company Frosted Head and has been set to 90. This has a Scorpion Bridge. The strings are new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings and this has wonderful action. This is also a stellar player with some serious bang.
This would be one of the best Scruggs Standards to choose from, made at the right time with the right parts and is set up and ready to rock.
