This is a mid 90’s Gibson RB12 Top Tension Banjo with Keith Tuners.  This has been inspected and set up at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta.

Description

Top Tension Banjos are known for being LOUD and having a tone that only comes from a top tension.  These are also heavy banjos which may explain why they are not used more often.  This is a gorgeous Top Tension that sounds like a cannon and plays like a samurai sword.

This has a 3 ply hard rock maple shell with a mahogany neck and resonator.  The hardware is top tension nickel hardware and includes a one piece Gibson USA flange.  This also has a Gibson USA Kulesh Tone Ring.  The fretboard is rosewood with style 12 inlay and there is w/b/w binding on the neck and resonator.  The tuners are all Keith tuners with amber buttons.  Two are D tuners and the 1st and 4th strings also have standard Keith Tuners.  This set of tuners would be $400 by itself and is definitely an upgrade.  This also includes an original Gibson hardshell case.  I want to also mention the fretboard is radiused and this has a radiused bridge as well.

Condition

This is in fantastic shape and also has been professionally cleaned at the Banjo Warehouse.  The finish looks great and has been waxed to a nice shine.  I took apart the banjo and buffed all of the metal which now looks fantastic.  The fretboard has been cleaned and oiled and the frets show almost no wear.  There are spikes at the 7th and 9th frets.  This hardshell case is in excellent shape as well.

Set Up

This has been set up at the Banjo Warehouse in Atlanta.  This has a new Huber frosted head by Remo which is set to 90.  The case has the special top tension adjusting tool if you want to adjust the head.  The bridge is a Snuffy Smith radius bridge and is intonated.  The strings are new Huber Truetone .10 gauge strings and the action is set well.  This is adjustable and is currently playing great.

This banjo will outdo normal banjos as far as volume because that is what these banjos do.  These also are rare.
