Description

2004 Gibson JD Crowe Blackjack. This is an RB3 style banjo with copper flashing hardware instead of nickel. The pot and neck are mahogany with a rosewood fretboard. There is white binding on the neck and resonator. The fretboard has a special flying eagle style inlay with some additions that make it unique. There is also inlay on the headstock with a JD Crowe signature on the truss rod cover and 21st fret. There is engraving on the tension hoop and tone ring which is original. This is all original.

Condition

The wood is in excellent condition. The finish is in great shape with basically no sign of wear. The copper flashing looks good on the tension hoop, tone ring, arm rest and tailpiece. The copper on the flange is pretty worn. That is the only down side to the banjo. The copper has pretty much worn off on the flange. That can be replated and it doesn’t look awful as is. The frets are in really good shape in fact they are fat and round. There are spikes at the 7th-10th frets. The banjo is in overall great shape with just worn copper on the flange.

Sound and Playability

The banjo has been set up here at our shop. The action is low and there is no buzzing. This really plays great. The banjo plays fast and puts out a lot of volume. The Blackjack is not only rare but it is very desirable. The copper adds a unique tone that is unmatched. This is an amped up version of the classic bluegrass RB3 sound. The copper does make a difference.
