Greg Rich is known for being one of the greatest banjo designers and instrument builders of our time. He left Gibson in 1993 and started Rich and Taylor with Tut Taylor’s son Mark. The Rich and Taylor banjos are probably the most undervalued banjos in the market today, and they will consistently compete with or even outdo Gibson Banjos made the same year. This is a JD Crowe model and just last year JD Crowe passed away. This is a fantastic tribute to JD Crowe made at one of the finest banjo companies of this era.
This has a 3 ply hard rock maple shell with a mahogany neck and resonator. The fretboard is rosewood with a JD Crowe inlay. This has nickel hardware which is all original including a one piece flange and a Kulesh Tone Ring. There is white binding on each side of the neck and resonator. This banjo has a lot of pop and would be essentially identical to an RB3 or RB75 in construction. This also includes a nice hardshell case and also an original Rich and Taylor Warranty Paper.
This banjo definitely has some cosmetic wear, particularly on the neck, but this is in very good condition and has been cleaned at our shop. The neck binding has cracking on the side at every fret. The binding is the white strip of plastic going down each side of the neck and there are pics to show it has a lot of cracking. That is not in the wood, it is in the plastic.
There is also a lot of heavy checking on the back of the neck and the headstock which is pictured. That is not wood cracking, that is checking which is finish cracking. Some of it almost looks like neck cracking in the wood but it is simply heavy finish checking.
Other then this binding cracking and finish checking this banjo is in really good shape. This has been disassembled and all of the metal has been buffed with a high powered buffer and looks great. There is some button scratching in the finish of the resonator but I have also waxed all of the finish and it looks good. The fretboard has been cleaned and oiled and the frets and board are in great shape. All of this checking and binding wear has to be from temperature and climate, not excessive playing. The frets have very little wear and what little wear is there is on only the first few frets.
The case is in great shape inside and out. The Banjo is in very good condition but there is nothing that is actual damage, just some weathering and this has zero functional issues.
This has been set up at our shop. The head is a new Remo frosted head and is set to 90. The bridge is a Sullivan Old Growth Bridge and the intonation is set. This has new Huber strings and this banjo is a fantastic player. This is truly a top quality instrument from a functional perspective and it is set up and ready to go.
