I’m excited to offer this exceptional 1969 Gibson RB-250 Mastertone banjo – a true collector’s piece representing one of the most interesting transitional periods in Gibson banjo history. Serial number 902032 places this instrument right at the pivotal moment when Gibson was experimenting with design elements that would define their future direction.
What makes this 1969 RB-250 so special is its unique combination of features that existed for only a brief window. Gibson changed to the distinctive “fiddle-style” peghead in 1969, making this one of the earliest examples of this iconic design. The beautiful tobacco brown sunburst finish, one-piece flange construction, and classic bowtie mother-of-pearl inlays create a stunning visual package that captures the essence of Gibson’s craftsmanship.
This banjo features the coveted flathead tone ring configuration with a thin rim (under 1/2″) that came about when Gibson had their amplifier division take over banjo rim production. The mahogany neck, pot, and resonator deliver that unmistakable Gibson Mastertone tone that’s been the gold standard for bluegrass players for decades. The ebony fingerboard with elegant bowtie inlays provides smooth playability up and down the neck.
The hardware tells its own story of quality – heavy-duty Kluson “stairstep” tuners, chrome plating instead of the typical nickel, and the distinctive short L-brackets where the pot drops fully into the resonator.
From a player’s perspective, this banjo offers that warm, woody tone characteristic of the best vintage Mastertones. The thin rim construction actually contributes to a unique tonal response that some players prefer over the thicker rims of later years. Whether you’re recording in the studio or performing live, this instrument delivers the authentic vintage sound that modern reproductions struggle to capture.
The condition is excellent for a 55-year-old instrument. There’s minor finish crackling on the resonator and neck that’s completely normal for an instrument of this age, and some minor wear on the inside of the resonator. These cosmetic signs of age don’t affect playability or tone – they’re simply the patina of a well-loved vintage instrument.
This is your chance to own a piece of banjo history from Gibson’s golden era. The 1969 transitional RB-250 is increasingly sought after by collectors and players who appreciate the unique combination of pre-war styling with the reliability of late-1960s construction. At this price point, you’re getting professional-grade vintage tone and the prestige of owning a true Gibson Mastertone.
Includes hardshell case for protection and portability.
