Stelling Banjos
Stelling banjos are known for their bright, powerful tone and exceptional build quality. Geoff Stelling built them by hand in Afton, Virginia from 1974 until the company closed at the end of 2022, roughly 7,000 instruments over nearly five decades. Well-known models include the Staghorn, Bellflower, Red Fox, Virginian, Golden Cross, and Sunflower, and Stellings have been played by Bill Emerson, Alan Munde, Don Reno, Eddie Adcock, Alison Brown, and Tony Trischka, among others.

We ship free within the United States. Every instrument is carefully packed, fully insured, and arrives ready to play.
Looking for a Stelling you don’t see listed? We always have more Stellings in the shop than appear online. Each one is restored and set up by hand before it goes online, and because that work is detailed and time-intensive, we don’t post a banjo until it’s truly ready to play. Models moving through that process right now include the Red Fox, Sunflower in both flathead and archtop, Bellflower in both standard and top tension, Master’s Cross, Afton Star, Golden Cross, Masterpiece, and Two Bird Virginian, among others. Rare 1987 Stelling One-Bird Virginian from the original Philadelphia owner. Gold-plated and heavily hand-engraved with the proprietary Stelling tone ring, mother-of-pearl Cardinal peghead inlay, and walnut neck and resonator. Gold plating refreshed in April 2026 by Huber Banjos. Serial 3149. Original case and paperwork included.
