Here’s the original MicroBass that started a revolution—and the fretless version takes it to another level entirely. The Gold Tone M-BassFL delivers that smooth, singing upright bass tone that fretless players crave, all from an instrument you can toss in an overhead bin.
When I first played one of these fretless models, I was genuinely surprised. Acoustically, it’s got enough voice to hold its own at a jam session or around a campfire. But plug it into an acoustic amp or bass amp, and you’re getting tones that genuinely rival an upright. The specially developed Aquila Thunderblack polymer strings are the secret sauce here—they’re easy on your fingers and produce that fundamental, woody bottom end that sits perfectly in a mix.
The M-BassFL features a nato mini-dreadnought cutaway body with a mahogany top and okoume back and sides. Gold Tone designed this one with players in mind: the arched back and comfort-beveled top mean you can play all night without fighting the instrument. The walnut fingerboard is silky smooth for those expressive slides and vibratos that make fretless playing so rewarding, and the dot markers help you stay oriented as you move up the neck.
The onboard UB-300T preamp gives you everything you need for amplified performance: volume control, bass and treble EQ sliders, and a built-in chromatic tuner that’s actually accurate and useful. The butterfly bass tuners hold pitch reliably, and the two-way adjustable truss rod means you can dial in your preferred action.
At 2.8 pounds and 23 inches of scale length, this is a legitimate gigging instrument that fits in spaces a full-size bass never could. I keep one in my office and grab it constantly—it’s just that much fun to play.
