Vintage Japanese 1979 Gold Star GF-100 HF (Hearts and Flowers) with original hardshell case

Built during a period when Gold Star was meticulously replicating the most sought-after pre-war flathead banjos, this ’79 model delivers an undeniable punch, clarity, and sustain.

It comes with an original Gold Star tone ring, bound mahogany resonator with dual concentric rings, mahogany neck, and the original hardware.

This GF-100 was in rough shape when it came into the shop but after cleaning it up, we’ve found it’s in overall good condition for its age.

We took the neck to our friend Eric at Earthshaking Music in Atlanta and he professionally repaired a crack in the back of the headstock. The back of the neck has some noticeable denting from a capo but it doesn’t affect the playability. The resonator is in great shape with virtually no scratching or marks in the finish.

This banjo comes with the original case which is functional but not in great shape.

The Japanese deservedly have a reputation for top-quality craftsmanship. Japanese banjos are no exception. They are beautifully crafted instruments and have the clear tone that you’d expect from quality banjo. Many of the Japanese Mastertone style banjos were so good they are often referred to by players and collectors as “Masterclones”.

Japan boasts the world’s second-largest music industry after the United States. This civilization has played stringed instruments for centuries, including their traditional banjo the Shamisen. Today, the Japanese have a large Bluegrass following.

Now, American tradition meets Japanese precision in a collection of banjos that will satisfy the musical bent of seasoned players and eager newcomers. You’ll find evidence of the Japanese pursuit of perfection in any of these worthy instruments.
