What a find! I’m thrilled to offer this exceptional 2003 Stelling Red Fox banjo, serial number 5652 β one of the last banjos Geoff Stelling crafted in 2003 according to his chronology. This represents a truly special era in Stelling’s history, as it features the coveted Tony Pass 600TS old wood rim that Stelling began incorporating in 2002.
The Red Fox has been a cornerstone of the Stelling lineup since 1990, originally designed for the late, great Bill Emerson. This particular instrument showcases everything that made the Red Fox so beloved β stunning red-stained, highly flamed curly maple that catches the light beautifully, intricate abalone maple leaf inlays dancing up the fingerboard, and that iconic red fox inlay gracing the headstock.
The combination of Stelling’s masterful craftsmanship with Tony Pass’s legendary rim work creates an instrument with exceptional tonal depth and projection. The bell bronze tone ring delivers that classic bright, punchy Stelling sound that cuts through any mix, while the old wood rim adds warmth and complexity that you simply can’t get with newer wood.
This banjo is in excellent condition for its age, showing only minor fret wear and oxidation on the metal components (see photos) β completely normal and expected for a 20+ year old instrument. The flange and tone ring patina actually adds character and doesn’t affect the sound whatsoever. The playability is fantastic, and it includes spikes at the 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th frets for enhanced playing comfort.
Included is the original Stelling hardshell case, which shows some wear but provides excellent protection for this beautiful instrument.
At $5999.99, this represents incredible value for a vintage Stelling with these specifications. Tony Pass rims are increasingly sought after, and finding one in a Red Fox from this early era is quite rare.
Whether you’re a professional picker or serious collector, this banjo delivers both the tone and aesthetics that Stelling is renowned for. Don’t let this one slip away!
