Here we have a truly exceptional 1980 Gibson RB-250 Mastertone banjo that represents one of the finest examples from this era. We received this instrument on a trade-in, and I can tell you it’s been extraordinarily well cared for over its 45 years.
This banjo comes from right after Gibson’s challenging period in the 1970s when they significantly improved their rim construction. Instead of the softer multi-ply rims from earlier years, this RB-250 features a superior 3-ply hard rock maple shell rim that you can absolutely hear in the tone – much more solid and resonant than the earlier models.
The hardware is all original and in beautiful condition, including the sought-after original clamshell tailpiece and Gibson armrest (with “Gibson” clearly stamped on it). The fingerboard features the simplified leaves and bows pattern that was used in the late 1930s on Gibson RB-75 banjos – the same pattern found on Curtis McPeake’s famous “Ole Betsy.”
The banjo is in extraordinarily nice, shiny condition throughout. The metal hardware gleams, the resonator shows just a few minor nicks that you’d expect from a well-played 45-year-old instrument, and the neck is in really good shape. All original tuning pegs are included and function perfectly.
This is a two-piece flange banjo with original tone ring – everything is exactly as it left Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1980. The original case is included and remains in good condition with just a few scuffs and scratches from decades of careful transport.
This represents an affordable way to acquire a genuine Gibson Mastertone with that unmistakable Gibson sound and feel. Serial number 82140012.
You can hear and test this banjo along with 70+ others in our showroom – just give us a day’s notice at 404-218-8580. We’re only seven minutes from the airport, making it easy for serious players to visit from anywhere.
