Let me be direct with you: the Gold Tone OB-300/L is the left-handed version of one of the most visually and sonically impressive flat head banjos available at anywhere near this price point. I’ve handled a lot of professional banjos over my 45-plus years in this business, and what Gold Tone has accomplished with the OB-300 line consistently impresses me. The centerpiece is that 11-inch, 20-hole flat top bell bronze tone ring — the same category of tone ring found in the world’s finest professional banjos. It delivers that authoritative, projecting voice that serious players demand, whether you’re on stage, in a recording session, or around a serious picking circle. Left-handed players deserve the same quality and selection as right-handed players, and Gold Tone has made that possible here without compromise.
Then there’s the visual story, which is equally compelling. The curly maple neck is bound with matching flamed maple and abalone-style binding — a combination that looks genuinely luxurious. The modified Tree of Life fingerboard inlay is one of the most thoughtful designs I’ve seen: rather than a purely decorative vine pattern that can leave you disoriented on the neck, Gold Tone worked flowers into the pattern at the functional fret position markers. You get the elegance of a high-end inlay without sacrificing your navigational landmarks. The headstock and resonator carry matching abalone-and-pearl-style ABS inlay work, and the triple-plated gold hardware ties everything together into a cohesive, unmistakably premium package. The 14-inch flamed maple resonator, one-piece cast flange, ZeroGlide nut, and GT Master Planetary tuners are all exactly what you’d specify if you were building your dream banjo from scratch. This instrument is built for the player who wants to be heard — and noticed.
Before this OB-300/L ships from Banjo Warehouse, our in-house luthier Tara performs a thorough professional setup on every instrument. Tara trained at the Huber Banjo factory under Steve Huber and Bennie Boling — two of the most respected names in American banjo building — and she brings that expertise to every instrument that leaves our shop. That means proper head tension, action set correctly at the nut and bridge, intonation checked, and the banjo tuned and playing-ready the moment it arrives at your door. For a left-handed instrument especially, that setup attention matters: you’re receiving a banjo that has been hands-on verified by someone who truly knows what a great-playing banjo feels and sounds like.
Why Buy From Banjo Warehouse
Banjo Warehouse is an authorized Gold Tone dealer, which means you receive the full manufacturer’s warranty and the confidence that comes with buying from a shop that Gold Tone has vetted and trusts. I’m Geoff Hohwald — I’ve been in the banjo world since the late 1970s, co-founded Watch & Learn in Atlanta, wrote Banjo Primer (still the top-rated beginner banjo method), and co-designed the Gold Tone OB-Standard alongside the Gold Tone team, so I know this product line from the inside. I co-authored Banjo Camp! with Pete Seeger and Tony Trischka, and my work on banjo technique has been cited on Wikipedia’s articles on Banjo Roll and Scruggs style. When I say the OB-300 is exceptional for its price, that’s not a sales pitch — it’s a professional assessment. We also make it easy to own this instrument: financing is available through PayPal Pay in 4, Afterpay, and 3, 6, 12, or 24-month plans, all with no late fees. Reach out any time with questions — we’re happy to talk banjos.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this truly a left-handed banjo, or is it a right-handed banjo restrung?
This is a purpose-built left-handed instrument — the OB-300/L. The neck is constructed as a mirror image of the standard right-handed model, meaning the nut, coordinator rods, and overall geometry are all designed for left-handed playing. It is not simply a right-handed banjo with the strings flipped, which would compromise playability and tone.
How does the bell bronze tone ring on the OB-300 compare to what you’d find on less expensive banjos?
Most entry- and mid-level banjos use a cast pot metal or lighter brass tone ring, or no tone ring at all. Bell bronze — a specific high-tin-content brass alloy — is what the top American makers have traditionally used in their finest instruments because of the way it sustains and projects. The sand-cast process on the OB-300’s ring results in a slightly rougher, denser surface compared to machined rings, which many players and builders feel contributes to a warmer, more complex tone. It’s a significant upgrade that you hear and feel the moment you play this banjo next to something in a lower tier.
Does the hard case provide adequate protection for travel and gigging?
Yes — the OB-300/L ships with a full hard-shell case. For an instrument at this level and price, Gold Tone includes proper protection rather than a gig bag, which I think is the right call. The case is sturdy enough for regular gigging and road use. If you travel frequently by air or need an even more rugged option, feel free to reach out and we can discuss additional case options.
