When I first got my hands on the Gold Tone AC-1, I understood immediately why it earned ‘Best in Show’ honors at the 2016 Summer NAMM Show in Nashville. At under four pounds, this little openback banjo is genuinely easy to hold for hours — a big deal if you’re a beginner still building endurance, a parent shopping for a child’s first banjo, or someone who wants a lightweight travel companion. The composite rim is the secret: it’s rigid, resonant, and far more consistent than wood at this price point. Mated to a slim Nato neck with a rosewood fingerboard, the AC-1 plays better than almost anything else in its class. The all-black aesthetic — matching neck, rim, Zero Glide nut, and tuner buttons — gives it a clean, purposeful look that doesn’t scream ‘beginner.’ I’ve recommended this banjo in my instructional work for years, and I’ve never had a student come back disappointed.
The Zero Glide nut is a detail I especially appreciate on an entry-level instrument. Traditional beginner banjos often have nuts cut so high that the strings are nearly impossible to fret in first position — which is discouraging and teaches bad habits. The Zero Glide nut on the AC-1 keeps the action honest and consistent right out of the box. The 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, dot inlays, two-way adjustable truss rod, and Remo LC Frosted head round out a feature set you’d be hard-pressed to find at this price anywhere else. The 11″ composite rim with a single coordinator rod and an adjustable tailpiece means the tone is stable and easy to dial in as you grow. Gold Tone backs all of this with a three-year transferable warranty — real peace of mind for a beginner’s first investment.
Each instrument receives a professional setup at Gold Tone’s factory in Titusville, Florida before it ships to you. That means the action is adjusted to a comfortable playing height, the bridge is properly positioned for accurate intonation, and the head tension is dialed in for good tone. Every instrument gets hands-on attention because I know from decades of teaching that a well-set-up banjo is the difference between a student who sticks with it and one who quits in the first month.
Why Buy From Banjo Warehouse
Banjo Warehouse is an authorized Gold Tone dealer, which means you’re covered by Gold Tone’s full three-year transferable warranty and you’re buying an instrument that came through legitimate distribution channels — no gray-market surprises. I’ve been in this industry for over 45 years. I co-founded Watch & Learn in Atlanta, wrote Banjo Primer (the top-rated beginner banjo method on the market), and co-designed the OB-Standard with Gold Tone, so when I say the AC-1 is the real deal for a beginner, that’s not a marketing line — it’s a considered opinion from someone who has put thousands of students on their first banjo. We offer flexible financing through PayPal Pay in 4, Afterpay, and 3, 6, 12, and 24-month plans with no late fees, so you can get playing without waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Gold Tone AC-1 good enough for an adult beginner, or is it just a kids’ banjo?
It’s genuinely good for any beginner, adult or child. The slim neck, low action from the Zero Glide nut, and lightweight composite rim make it comfortable for smaller hands, but adults take to it just as easily. I’ve pointed plenty of grown-up first-timers toward the AC-1 and they’ve been happy with it through months of learning. When a player is ready to move up, the AC-1 holds its resale value well — and it’s even transferable under Gold Tone’s warranty.
Can I add a resonator to the AC-1 later if I decide I want a louder, fuller sound?
Yes — Gold Tone designed the AC-1 with that option in mind. A compatible resonator can be added later to give you that fuller, projected tone you’d want for jamming or playing in a group setting. It’s a nice upgrade path that lets you start simple and grow into the instrument without having to buy a whole new banjo.
