This is the left-handed version of the Gold Tone Plucky Traveler Banjo, and if you’ve been searching for a compact, genuinely playable left-handed banjo that won’t weigh down your pack or break your budget, this is it. I’ve played a lot of travel instruments over the decades, and most of them make some painful compromise — a cramped nut, a sky-high action, or a tinny tone that makes you want to leave it in the tent. The Plucky sidesteps all of that. At 2.6 pounds with a nut width close to a full-size banjo and an action set low enough for real playing, this is a travel banjo that actually invites you to play. Whether you’re a younger student just starting out, a left-handed player who’s tired of fighting right-handed instruments, or a seasoned picker who wants something to toss in an overhead bin, the Plucky earns its place.
Gold Tone built this one around an 8-inch multi-ply maple rim with a Remo LC Smooth head, a maple neck with ebony-capped maple bridge, and sealed guitar-style tuners that hold tune reliably. It ships tuned to open C (CGCEG), but it’s versatile — you can retune to open D or even standard G with the right string gauges. Twenty-one frets give you a real range to work with, and the 15-7/8-inch scale length sits comfortably in the hand. The vintage brown high-gloss finish and chrome hardware look sharp for something this compact and practical. Every Plucky receives a professional factory setup at Gold Tone in Titusville, Florida before it ships.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Plucky a real banjo or more of a toy?
It’s a real banjo. I get this question a lot, and I understand the skepticism — travel instruments have a bad reputation. But the Plucky has a nut width close to a full-size banjo, a 21-fret maple fingerboard, and a proper Remo head on an 8-inch multi-ply maple rim. The action is set up to actually play comfortably. It won’t replace a full-size resonator banjo on stage, but for practicing, traveling, and making music anywhere, it’s genuinely good.
Why does the Plucky tune to open C instead of standard G?
The shorter 15-7/8-inch scale length makes open C (CGCEG) the natural home tuning for the Plucky — the string tension sits right and the instrument sounds its best there. That said, Gold Tone notes you can retune to open D or even standard G by switching to strings gauged .014, .030, .024, .016, .014. If standard G tuning is important to you, that’s a straightforward string swap.
