I’ve been playing and selling banjos for over 45 years, and one thing I’ve learned is that clawhammer players have very specific demands — demands that most entry-level instruments simply don’t meet. The Gold Tone CB-100 is a genuine exception. Built for the old-time and clawhammer tradition, this banjo ships with a scooped rosewood fingerboard so your fretting hand can drop comfortably into that characteristic clawhammer position without fighting the fretboard. Add in planetary-gear tuning machines that hold pitch with authority in outdoor festival conditions, a Remo Renaissance head with that warm, old-time-appropriate tone, and a No Knot tailpiece, and you’ve got a banjo that’s thought through from headstock to tailpiece for exactly the style of playing you’re doing. Whether you’re a dedicated old-time picker heading into your first festival season or an intermediate player ready to step up from a beginner rig, the CB-100 is genuinely built for you.
What sets the CB-100 apart from other banjos in this price range is the combination of features Gold Tone has engineered into a single coherent package. The rolled brass flat bar tone ring gives this open-back banjo a focused, warm voice with enough projection to hold its own in a jam circle. The three-ply maple rim is solid and resonant without being heavy, keeping the overall weight at a very comfortable six pounds — important when you’re playing on your feet at an outdoor festival all weekend. The unique Gold Tone-designed wooden dowel stick hides a coordinator rod inside it, which means you can make quick, precise string action adjustments in the field without a complicated setup process. The vintage brown high-gloss finish and A-style headstock buttons give the whole instrument an honest, old-school character that suits the music it’s made for. The ZeroGlide nut is a particularly thoughtful touch — it virtually eliminates friction at the nut and helps the instrument stay in tune under heavy playing conditions.
Each instrument receives a professional setup at Gold Tone’s factory in Titusville, Florida before it ships to you. That means action adjusted to a comfortable, accurate playing height, intonation checked, nut slots verified, tuners confirmed to be seated and functioning properly, and the head tensioned to where it needs to be for optimal tone. I know from decades in this business that a well-set-up instrument makes a transformative difference in how easily you progress and how much you enjoy playing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the CB-100 specifically designed for clawhammer, or can it be played in other styles?
The CB-100 is genuinely purpose-built for clawhammer and old-time playing. The scooped fingerboard is the most obvious tell — that scoop below the 17th fret is there specifically so clawhammer players can strike the strings comfortably without catching the fingerboard edge. The open-back design and rolled brass tone ring are also tuned to produce the warm, percussive voice that suits old-time music. You could certainly play fingerpicking styles on it, but if you’re a Scruggs-style or bluegrass player, you’d want to look at a resonator banjo instead. This one was built for the clawhammer tradition through and through.
What does the hidden coordinator rod system actually do, and why does it matter?
On most open-back banjos, the coordinator rod (or lack of one) is a fixed part of the dowel stick, and adjusting the neck angle or string action requires removing hardware and making mechanical changes that can be fiddly in the field. Gold Tone’s clever design on the CB-100 conceals a functional coordinator rod inside what looks like a traditional wooden dowel. That means you can make precise neck angle and action adjustments quickly and easily, without the banjo looking or feeling like a modern production instrument. For festival players who need to make fine adjustments between sessions or after traveling, this is a genuinely practical feature — not a gimmick.
