I want to be upfront: this is the left-handed version of the Gold Tone PBS, and if you’re a lefty looking for a professional-grade squareneck resonator guitar without compromising on components, this is one of the finest values I’ve seen at this price point. The PBS is built around a genuine US-made Beard cone, spider bridge, and Paul Beard’s celebrated open soundwell — not imported approximations, but the real thing, designed and sourced from one of the most respected names in resonator guitar craft. The mahogany body and neck are finished in a gorgeous tobacco sunburst high gloss that looks every bit as good as it sounds, and the Paul Beard 6-string tailpiece completes a hardware package that’s simply hard to argue with under $1,500.
Paul Beard’s open soundwell design gives this guitar a projection and clarity that punches well above the PBS’s price class. The squareneck configuration and standard GBDGBD open G tuning put it squarely in bluegrass and Americana dobro territory — this is a stage-ready workhorse built to hold up through years of honkytonks, festival campgrounds, and recording sessions alike. The rosewood fingerboard features 19 frets with dot inlays, the nut is a 1-7/8″ ZeroGlide for smooth open-tuning performance, and sealed guitar-style tuners keep things stable. The two-way adjustable truss rod means you can dial in the neck to your playing environment with confidence. At 5.5 lbs., it’s light enough to play standing for a full set without fatigue. A hardshell case is included — not an afterthought gig bag, a proper case.
Each instrument receives a professional setup at Gold Tone’s factory in Titusville, Florida before it ships to you. You’re not getting a factory-fresh instrument dropped in a box — you’re getting a properly played-in, dialed-in instrument ready to go the moment you open the case.
Why Buy From Banjo Warehouse
Banjo Warehouse is an authorized Gold Tone dealer, which means your PBS comes with full manufacturer warranty support and you’re buying from a shop that knows these instruments inside and out. I’ve spent over 45 years in the acoustic instrument world — co-owning Watch & Learn in Atlanta since the 1980s, writing Banjo Primer (still the top-rated beginner banjo method), and co-designing the Gold Tone OB-Standard — and I bring that same depth of knowledge to every instrument we carry. We don’t stock things we don’t believe in. The PBS earns its place in our lineup because it delivers genuine Beard components at a price point that respects working musicians. Financing is available through PayPal Pay in 4, Afterpay, and 3, 6, 12, or 24-month plans with no late fees — because a great instrument shouldn’t have to wait.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Beard cone and spider different from generic resonator components?
Paul Beard’s cones and spiders are made in the USA to tight tolerances that significantly affect tone, volume, and sustain. Generic imported cones can vary widely in quality and consistency. The Beard components in the PBS are the same family of parts used in Beard’s own high-end instruments — you’re getting that lineage in a guitar that costs a fraction of a custom Beard build. It’s one of the main reasons I stock this model.
Is this guitar suitable for a beginner, or is it more of an intermediate-to-advanced instrument?
The PBS can absolutely work for a motivated beginner who knows they want to play dobro-style resonator guitar seriously, but it’s really built for intermediate and advanced players who are ready for professional components and stage durability. If you’re just starting out and want to explore resonator playing first, I’m happy to point you toward a more entry-level option. But if you’ve been playing for a while and want an instrument you won’t outgrow, the PBS is the right call.
Left-handed resonator guitars are hard to find — is this a true left-handed build or a converted right-handed instrument?
This is a true left-handed build from Gold Tone, not a field conversion. The neck, body, and all components are constructed and assembled as a left-handed instrument from the ground up. Gold Tone is one of the few manufacturers that produces genuine left-handed models at this price point, which is a big part of why we carry and recommend them for lefty players.
