Pisgah Banjo Co. builds openback banjos by hand in Asheville, North Carolina, from native Appalachian hardwoods, in a shop run on solar power. Banjo Warehouse in Yellow Springs, Ohio is an authorized Pisgah dealer.
We carry Pisgah because demand for American made clawhammer openbacks keeps growing, and Pisgah builds exactly what those players are after: a real wood rim, an old-time voice, and a banjo made by hand rather than assembled overseas.
What makes a Pisgah banjo different?
Pisgah uses wood tone rims rather than metal tone rings on most of its models, which is where the dark, plunky old-time voice comes from. The builds use traditional dowel stick construction, native hardwoods like walnut and cherry, and aged brass hardware. Every Pisgah carries a limited lifetime warranty.
Are Pisgah banjos good for clawhammer?
Yes. Pisgah builds openback banjos specifically, with frailing scoops at the end of the fingerboard and the warm wood-rim and head combination clawhammer players look for. See our guide to the best clawhammer banjos for how they compare to other makers.
How many models does Pisgah make?
Eleven, ranging from the Roscoe, their most affordable boutique model, up through higher appointed builds. We can order any model in the line.
Can I order a custom Pisgah banjo?
Yes. Pisgah does full custom work: your choice of woods, rim size, neck profile, hardware and inlay. Call Geoff at (404) 218-8580 and we will walk you through the options and the current wait time.
Where are Pisgah banjos made?
Asheville, North Carolina. Every banjo is built by hand in the Appalachian mountains from regionally sourced hardwoods.
