Why the Goodtime Parlor?

The Goodtime Openback is the banjo teachers recommend more than any other, but its full 26 1/4 inch scale is a long reach for a young player. The Parlor keeps everything that makes the Goodtime work and shortens the neck to a 23 inch scale with 19 frets, so small hands can fret chords cleanly from the first lesson.

It keeps the 3-ply violin grade maple rim that gives every Goodtime its clear, ringing voice. Deering strings the Parlor with medium gauge strings, which balance the tension and tone on the shorter scale.

The Pot

11 inch 3-ply violin grade maple rim with an 11 inch frosted high crown head. Beveled steel tension hoop with 16 flat J-hooks. US Bronze powder finish on the tension hoop, tailpiece and armrest. 5/8 inch Goodtime Smile bridge and Deering’s patented Goodtime tailpiece. Hand rubbed polyurethane finish with carnauba wax.

Rock maple neck with a comfortable D shape and a satin finish. 23 inch scale with 19 pressed-in nickel silver frets. 1 1/4 inch Lexan polycarbonate nut. Art Deco inspired hardwood inlays. Sealed geared tuners and a Goodtime geared 5th string tuner. Overall length 35 inches.

What size banjo is right for a child?

For most younger players, a shorter scale makes the biggest difference. The Goodtime Parlor’s 23 inch scale is over three inches shorter than a standard 26 1/4 inch banjo, so the frets sit closer together and the neck is easier to reach around.
