Gold Tone LG-A/L Left-Handed Amethyst Little Gem Banjo-Ukulele with Bag

This is the left-handed version of the Gold Tone Little Gem Banjo-Ukulele in Amethyst — a see-through purple-violet instrument that won Best in Show at Summer NAMM 2018 and has been delighting players ever since. Built around an 8″ see-through acrylic rim and resonator in that gorgeous amethyst finish, the LG-A/L delivers a bright, cutting banjo-uke voice that carries beautifully whether you’re strumming around a campfire, busking, or picking through tunes in the living room. It’s genuinely fun to play and genuinely fun to look at — and for left-handed players, having a proper left-handed build rather than a restrung right-handed instrument makes a meaningful difference in feel and playability.

Under the hood, Gold Tone put real thought into this little instrument. The maple neck is smooth and comfortable, the 15″ concert scale length keeps chord shapes manageable, and 18 frets with dot-and-star inlays give you plenty of room to explore. The 5/8″ maple bridge with an ebony cap contributes to the LG-A/L’s clear, defined tone, and the rolled brass flat-bar tension hoop and chrome hardware give it a quality feel that belies the price. Tuned GCEA — standard concert ukulele tuning — it’s immediately familiar to any uke player, while the banjo-style head and rim add that distinctive chime and snap that makes the banjo-uke such a uniquely expressive instrument. Whether you’re a ukulele player curious about the banjo-uke sound or a banjo player looking for something compact and travel-friendly, the Amethyst Little Gem is a genuinely excellent choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this truly a left-handed instrument, or is it just a right-handed model with the strings reversed?

This is a genuine left-handed build. Gold Tone constructs the LG-A/L specifically for left-handed players — the neck, head, and hardware are all configured for left-hand playing, not simply a restrung right-handed instrument. Because Gold Tone builds left-handed Little Gems from their right-handed stock pool on demand, this is a build-to-order item with a typical lead time of 1–2 weeks from the time you place your order.

Do I need any prior banjo experience to play a banjo-ukulele?

Not at all. The Little Gem is tuned GCEA — exactly like a standard concert ukulele — so if you already play ukulele, you can pick it up immediately and use all the chord shapes and strumming patterns you already know. The banjo-style head and acrylic rim simply add a brighter, chime-y tone with a little more projection. If you’re brand new to stringed instruments, the short scale length and four-string layout make it one of the more approachable places to start.
