Gold Tone AC-4 Acoustic Composite 4-String Openback Irish Tenor Banjo with Gig Bag

If you’ve been searching for an affordable, well-built entry point into the world of Irish tenor banjo, the Gold Tone AC-4 is one of the most compelling options on the market today. Built around Gold Tone’s durable, lightweight composite rim, the AC-4 produces the mellow, plunky voice that sits naturally in Irish traditional sessions, folk ensembles, and old-time settings alike. It’s tuned GDAE — the standard Irish tenor tuning — so players coming from the mandolin or fiddle family will feel immediately at home, and complete beginners will appreciate how quickly the instrument responds and rewards early practice.

The AC-4’s nato neck carries a smooth rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays across 19 frets and a 22¾” scale length that keeps chord shapes and melody runs comfortable. The 1-3/16″ ZeroGlide nut keeps open strings resonant and properly intonated, while covered guitar-style tuners hold pitch reliably through a session. An 11″ Remo LC Smooth head mounted on a flat bar tension hoop and paired with a maple-and-ebony-capped bridge gives the AC-4 a focused midrange that projects clearly without overwhelming the room — exactly what a tenor banjo needs when trading tunes at a session. Chrome-plated hardware, black ABS binding, and a satin black finish round out a tidy, understated look that lets the music do the talking. At just 3.5 lbs., it’s easy to carry to any jam.

Your AC-4 ships factory-fresh direct from Gold Tone, where every instrument in the line receives a professional setup at their Titusville, Florida shop before it leaves the building. That means the action, intonation, and nut slots are dialed in by people who know these instruments inside and out — so your banjo plays well from the first note. A gig bag is included with every AC-4. As an authorized Gold Tone dealer, we back your purchase with the full manufacturer warranty, and our team is here before and after the sale for setup questions, string recommendations, and accessory advice. Financing is available through PayPal Pay in 4 and 3, 6, 12, or 24-month plans — all with no late fees, plus Afterpay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the AC-4 tuned like a mandolin or fiddle?

Yes — the AC-4 is tuned GDAE, the same intervals as a mandolin, fiddle, or octave mandolin, just on a tenor banjo. That makes it an intuitive step sideways for players already familiar with those instruments, and it’s the standard tuning used in Irish traditional music sessions worldwide.

Does the composite rim affect tone compared to a wood rim?

Gold Tone’s composite rim is engineered to be both lightweight and acoustically consistent, producing the warm, mellow, slightly plunky character that Irish tenor players look for in an openback banjo. It’s also more resistant to humidity and temperature swings than a traditional wood rim, which is a real practical advantage for players who gig or travel regularly.
