Gold Tone Grandmaster Elite F-Style Mandolin Honey Amber with Case (Presale)

This is a pre-order. Gold Tone has the Grandmaster Elite on order rather than in stock, so ordering now reserves one from the incoming run. We do not have a ship date from Gold Tone yet. Get in touch before you commit and we will tell you where the run currently stands. Your payment is fully refundable at any time before your mandolin ships, for any reason and with no restocking fee.

The Grandmaster Elite is the top of Gold Tone’s mandolin line, and it is built the way F-style mandolins were built before the category got cheap. The top is aged old-growth Swiss and Italian spruce: slow-grown, tight-grained wood that has been sitting long enough to be stable, and stiff enough to move air without being driven hard. That is the single spec that most separates a $4,000 mandolin from a $900 one, and it is the one you hear first.

Back and sides are 4A North American maple, with a three-piece maple neck. Three-piece necks are more work than one-piece and they stay put: the alternating grain resists the seasonal movement that pulls a mandolin neck out of relief. The fingerboard is ebony on a 6-inch radius, which is flatter than a guitar and rounder than a flat board, comfortable for chop chords without fighting you on single-note runs up the neck.

The finish is hand-applied nitrocellulose lacquer in honey amber, thin enough that the top can still breathe. Nitro is slower and costlier to apply than polyurethane and it will show its age, which is the point: it lets the instrument keep opening up over the years instead of sealing it under plastic. Ivoriod binding, an ebony bridge, a brass tailpiece engraved with the Gold Tone name, nickel hardware and Gotoh tuners finish it. A hard case is included.

It is worth being plain about who this is for. At four thousand dollars this is not a first mandolin. It is for a player who already knows what they want out of an F-style, the bark on the chop, the sustain on the tremolo, and wants an instrument that will not be the limiting factor.

Why Buy From Banjo Warehouse

We are an authorized Gold Tone dealer, so this is a genuine new instrument with the full manufacturer warranty. The shop is run by Geoff Hohwald, author of the Banjo Primer and co-designer of the Gold Tone OB-Standard, with over 45 years in the business. If you want to talk through whether the Elite, the Victorian or the Super Cremona is the right one, call or email and you will get a real answer rather than a spec sheet read back to you.

Financing is available through PayPal Pay in 4 and 3, 6, 12 and 24-month plans, all with no late fees, plus Afterpay. On a pre-order nothing ships until the instrument arrives, and your payment stays fully refundable until it does.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will it ship?

We do not have a date. Gold Tone has the Elite on order rather than in stock and has not published a window for this run. Get in touch and we will tell you exactly what we have been told, which is more useful than a guess printed on a page.

What happens to my money in the meantime?

It is fully refundable, at any time before the mandolin ships, for any reason, with no restocking fee. If the wait turns out to be longer than you want, you are not stuck.

What is the difference between the three Elite finishes?

Finish only. Honey amber, burst and vintage leather are the same instrument with the same woods, hardware and dimensions. Pick the one you like looking at.

How is the Elite different from the Victorian and the Super Cremona?

They sit above it in the Grandmaster line, with more appointment work and a higher price. The Elite is the one where the money is concentrated in the woods and the build rather than the ornamentation. Call if you want them compared properly.

Is nitrocellulose lacquer a problem?

Not for playing, no. It is softer than polyurethane, so it marks more easily and will check with age. Players who want a finish that stays showroom-perfect should know that going in. In exchange the top is freer to move, and most people who care about the difference consider it the better trade.
